Container Shipping

Twenty five container shipping lines serve the west coast of North America. A total volume of 34 million TEUs are carried per year. The Cosco led alliance has 24% of the market and  APL and NYK led alliances each have about 16% of the market. Maersk, of Denmark, is the leading carrier with about 12% market share. Maersk operates the largest container ships in the world and has 12% of the market. Chinese owned shipping companies including Cosco, Yang Ming, Evergreen, China Shipping, Sinotrans, and Wan Hai have rapidly gained market share and now have about 27% of the market.

Three large shipping alliances; CKHY, New World, and Grand, and two major shipping companies, Maersk and Evergreen control the 24 integrated terminals. The three different types of leaseholders are:

Tier 1- Integrated shipping company owned terminals-  K-Line, Hanjin, Yang-Ming, APL-NOL, Hyundai, Mitsui OSK, NYK, Evergreen    and Maersk.

      Tier 3- Investment company owned terminals- DP Ports , Ontario Teachers Pension Fund, Deutsche Bank
