Container Shipping
Twenty five container shipping lines serve the west coast of North America. A
total volume of 34 million TEUs are carried per year. The Cosco led alliance has 24% of the
market and APL and NYK led alliances each have about 16% of the market. Maersk, of Denmark, is the leading carrier with about
12%
market share. Maersk operates the largest container ships in the world and has
12% of the market. Chinese owned shipping companies including Cosco, Yang Ming, Evergreen, China
Shipping, Sinotrans, and Wan Hai have rapidly gained market share and now have
about 27% of the market.
